Summary

The long awaited paperback edition of this provocative and influential book has been updated to include a postscript containing a number of articles and critiques raising issues not addressed in the hardback edition. The author concludes this edition with an insightful afterword in which he addresses the points raised in the articles and book reviews, bringing the book up-to-date. Can we rely on the altruism of professionals or the public service ethos to deliver good quality health and education services? And how should patients, parents, and pupils behave-as grateful recipients or active consumers?
