Summary

This book examines planning the path that an autonomous road vehicle should follow and designing the controller for following that path accurately. The path tracking control is designed to be robust against uncertainties. The robustness is achieved through two different approaches. The first one is regulation of the path following dynamic model to reject the uncertainties and disturbances and to handle the variable time delays that are present. The second approach is to use a robust feedforward and feedback controller combination to achieve guaranteed performance. The presence of static or moving obstacles like other cars, pedestrians and bicyclists is also treated by presenting methods for modifying the path to avoid such collisions in realistic applications. The outstanding features of this book are that the methods introduced are easy to understand conceptually and apply by control engineering practitioners and graduate students working in autonomous driving applications. The controller parameters that are being tuned are presented graphically as regions of guaranteed performance which are easy to visualize and understand. The limits of performance are also easily seen with this approach. The hardware-in-the-loop simulation and experimental results are also a distinctive feature of the proposed book, and all the methods presented in the book are implementable in real-time and work in realistic applications.
