Cautionary Note
The reader should keep in mind that MindShare's book series often deals with rapidly evolving technologies. This being the case, it should be recognized that the book is a "snapshot" of the state of the targeted technology at the time that the book was completed. We attempt to update each book on a timely basis to reflect changes in the targeted technology, but, due to various factors (waiting for the next version of the spec to be "frozen," the time necessary to make the changes, and the time to produce the books and get them out to the distribution channels), there will always be a delay.
This Book Assumes PCI Background Knowledge
As with all MindShare books, this book assumes that the reader has prior knowledge of PCI (because PCI-X is built on top of PCI). Likewise, the PCI-X spec assumes prior knowledge of PCI and describes only how PCI-X differs from PCI as described in the PCI 2.2 spec and the 1.1 PCI-to-PCI Bridge Architecture spec. The reader may gain this background knowledge by reading the MindShare book entitled PCI System Architecture, Fourth Edition (published by Addison-Wesley).
Specifications This Book Is Based On
This book is based on the version 1.0 PCI-X specification and the version "AF" Errata and Clarifications document. Please note the author received the Errata and Clarifications document quite late in the development of the book and every effort was made to integrate this new information. In one or two cases, the amount of time that it would have taken to study and integrate the new information would have delayed the publishing of the book. Rather than delay the book, the author chose to clearly identify the area in question and urges the reader to read the appropriate section of the Errata and Clarifications document.

This book is intended for use by hardware and software design and support personnel. The tutorial approach to the subject may also make the book useful to technical people who are not involved in design or support.
Prerequisite Knowledge
The reader should be familiar with PC and PCI System Architectures. MindShare's ISA System Architecture and PCI System Architecture books provide that foundation material. PCI-X is built upon the PCI bus standard. This book assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of the PCI bus protocol.
